Occidental Leather Debuts The Ultimate Tool Bag Hot

Oxy_3000

If you thought the tool bags from Veto were cool, you will probably love the new Dr. Wood bag from Occidental Leather. If you don't like the price of the Veto bags, you will absolutely hate the price of the Dr. Wood, at over $450. But lets take a look at the Dr. Wood, maybe its worth is hiding inside.

First off, like all Occidental Leather bags, it is made in the USA. So if the other high end bags are priced in the $200 range and are made in China, the price for the Dr. Wood isn't far off. To make the bag strong, Oxy uses a cold rolled steel frame that is formed by hand. The bottom of the bag uses super strong high-density thermoformed polyethylene, and the sides and main body of the bag are made of padded 1050 denier ballistic nylon. You will also notice the trademark leather used as reinforcements and spiffy looking accents.

Oxy touts the bags as having a home for every conceivable tool used by a contractor. While that might be a stretch, the bag does have a total of 88 pockets and holders, and can probably hold every hand tool one would need on a job. The problem, the bag weighs 15 and a half pounds empty. Imagine how much it would weigh when all 88 pockets are filled up.

This is a VERY nice bag. It's nicer than most peoples luggage. It's nicer than my wife's purse. But....

I HATE this bag. I hate Veto bags too. And I really hate bucket tool bags (Bucket Boss), even though they weren't even mentioned. Why?

Well, they come with the intention of holding all of your tools, or at least as many as you can squeeze in them (bigger is better, right?). The result is a bag full of tools that weighs about 100 lbs. I would rather carry four 25lb bags than one 100lb bag. Not to mention, when you are tackling a specific project, they might hold all the tools you need but along with all those tools you don't need. I separate my tools into project specific bags, boxes, cases, and buckets. Plumbing tools in one tool box, electrical tools in the electrical bag, mechanic tools in their own tool box, etc. I even have a random tool "problem solver" tool box. Also, while more expensive, I have multiples of tools so I don't need to rob from a...

I love the bag but I would never buy one. I use a lot of hand tools daily, but this is overkill. I could probably get by with the smallest veto bag, but I don't like the idea of spending that much money on something that is made in china.

    Hi there,
In regards to the bags, I have a large veto and find it very useful and efficient. Im a small remodeller and also separate tools into tasks like drywall, paint, tiling etc. but have the one heavy veto that has most of my hand tools. Always prepared.

The reason I commented was just to say im gong to subscribe to show my support. I read your page all the time and really appreciate it. thanks!
