A Special Edition Router by Porter-Cable

Picture of a Router

This router fits in a niche between laminate trimmers and todays more common 2 1/4 horsepower Routers. It is rated a 7/8 horsepower. It is a compact and squat little tool. I particularly like to use it for freehand lettering. It spins up very smoothly, almost as if it had soft start electronics, and is very smooth running once up to speed. It does get rather hot during extended runs or when pressed hard.

I'm guessing that this is a mid 80s vintage although this model was as far as I can tell produced as late as 2002. It would appear that later models where painted the more familiar Porter Cable grey and black. This model router supposedly has a lot of history with Porter-Cable being one of the tools from the 40s that put them on the map, according to the history of the company posted on their website

It is a single speed, spinning at 22,000 RPM. It is rated at 6.5 Amps. It came with a 1/4 inch chuck. I don't think a larger chuck would be appropriate on a router this size. Its depth of cut is adjusted by rotating the body on its threaded base, with fine adjustment by a graduated collar. The only con to this router is the rounded top, no resting it on its head when changing bits.

I got a real deal on this from Ebay, purchasing it for a little over twenty bucks. I had been waiting a long time to grab one of these for a reasonable price. It pays to have saved searches.

Old School Switch

It has an "old school" style power switch.

I love the classic look of that router. Like you said, you can not stand it upside down, but it sure looks cool. smilies/grin.gif

My father has an older PC router with the trigger grip and that thing is rock solid. PC made some great tools back in the day, but there is no doubt that they have been going down hill, which is truly sad.

I hope some day someone finds my old tools and looks at them as being classics. New tools are more powerful, ergonomic, and have more bells and whistles. Unfortunately the durability and longevity seems to be lacking in many of them. I don't think many of mine will be around yet in 20 or 30 years.

Do you mean a D handle router or one with the power switch on one of the side grips?
Do you know what model it is?

I have an old Craftsman router that has a power switch on one of the handles that I'll blog about in the future.

It is labeled as a Rockwell 6752 router with a Porter Cable 150-B Grip. According to Porter Cable history, when Rockwell bought PC in the 60's they sold tools under both brand names. http://www.acetoolrepair.com/s...ec_id=1110

I have a saw model (315) that started life branded as a Porter-Cable and ended as a Rockwell
